13/07/2004

megabus.com, the UK’s first low-cost inter-city bus service, has won a major national award for innovation at the transport industry Oscars.

The ground-breaking service, which offers travel between more than 20 towns and cities from just £1, was named the most innovative transport project in the UK at the National Transport Awards.

Launched last year by Stagecoach, megabus.com is based on the same yield management concept as the budget airlines, with all seats on the no-frills, ticketless service booked on the internet.

More than 600,000 people across the UK - including students, commuters, families and “silver surfers”, the over 55s market who use the internet – have already used the popular service.

Brian Souter, Chief Executive of Stagecoach Group, said: “We are delighted that megabus.com has been recognised with such a prestigious award. Stagecoach continues to lead the way with new ideas on how to attract more people to public transport.

“megabus.com has changed the face of inter city bus travel with its bargain fares and easy-to-use website. This award is recognition of all the hard work put in by everyone at megabus.com and we are looking forward to welcoming even more customers on board in the months ahead.”

Last month, megabus.com extended its network to offer £1 “with frills” travel between Scotland and London in direct competition with the budget airlines. The 70-seat bendy buses on the Scotland-London route feature reclining seats, toilets and dedicated luggage space. New links have also been added from London to Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, Chesterfield, Leicester and Milton Keynes.

More than 400 people from across the transport industry attended the awards in London, organised by The Centre for Transport Policy in Aberdeen. megabus.com beat off competition from two other shortlisted entrants, Cornwall County Council and West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, to win the innovation award.

Hosted by Professor David Begg, Director, The Centre for Transport Policy, and Baroness Ros Scott, Chair, Transport Executive, Local Government Association, the awards recognise transport projects that are making a difference right across the UK.
