Responding to the publication today of the Government's rail White Paper, Delivering a Sustainable Railway, a Stagecoach Group spokesman said: "While we will need to study the announcement in detail, we welcome any measures that will help provide more capacity on Britain's busy railways.

"Across our rail franchises, we are working hard to provide as much additional capacity as we can now in line with our agreements with the Government.

"Britain has the fastest-growing railway in Europe and, clearly, meeting the challenge of growth is going to remain a major issue for all partners in the rail industry: Government, Network Rail and train operators.

"Longer trains and platforms, as well as more longer-term rolling stock and infrastructure investment, are vital if we are to deliver a railway that meets the requirements of passengers in the years ahead."
